The Argyle Highback Chair
Acquired in the Berkshire town of Reading, this pair of Argyle chairs are two of a set of six. The Argyle Chair was designed at the very end of the nineteenth century by the Scottish Arts and Crafts architect Charles Rennie Macintosh. These examples, hand made in solid teak, probably date from the later Art Deco period of the 1940’s to 50’s.
The chairs were stripped back and subject to a series of honest, legible repairs before being refinished with an antique wax. The original waxed horsehair stuffing to the drop-in seats was supplemented with additional hair, recovered with the original calico and then enclosed in a woollen interliner to meet current fire regulations. The top cover is a 100% linen fabric in a design developed by the English Arts and Crafts designer William Morris.
