Restoring items rather than throwing them away is very much in line with the idea of sustainability.

Restoration is not however by definition a ‘low environmental impact’ activity.

If large quantities of harmful materials are thrown away and replaced with new harmful materials during restoration, the environmental impact can be significant.

At the Chair Studio we measure the environmental impact of each restoration, considering two key elements:

how much waste is sent to landfill versus how much is re-used/ recycled.

how much newly manufactured synthetic material is introduced during the restoration versus how much natural material is introduced.

A sustainability report is then produced that includes a rating that is the average of these two measures.

We try and re-use as much of the original material as possible in order to:

reduce the amount of pollution caused by sending materials to landfill (see the fabric mountain featured above).

reduce the overall quantity of new materials that need to be manufactured.

We endeavour to use natural replacement materials in order to ensure that:

pieces have a longer lifespan (traditional upholstery can last for up to 100 years!).

materials will naturally decompose if the piece is discarded at the end of its life.

pieces do not contain potentially harmful chemicals and are naturally fire-retardant.
