The Nursery Window Chair
This Victorian Nursing chair was found in London, although it originated much further North in Edinburgh, Scotland. It bears the stamp of John Taylor and Son who worked out of Princes Street, Edinburgh, and who in 1852 were appointed ‘cabinet-makers and upholsterers in Ordinary to Her Majesty the Queen’. This low-seated chair would have been used by Victorian women to sit and play with young children in the nursery, bringing them down to a child’s level while also accommodating their voluminous skirts.
The chair was stripped back to its hardwood frame which was cleaned and polished. The original springs were re-used and the chair faithfully reupholstered using traditional techniques. It is stuffed solely with horsehair which has been stitched with twine to both secure in place and sculpt into shape . The hair has been dressed over with cotton wadding, before being encased in calico. The top cover is a polycotton blend chenille, being 80% cotton and 20% polyester.
